You know there are so many of us that, after years of subscriptions to countless magazines and tried and true applications on the water, we're pretty much certified and perfect candidates for teaching our future generation about the adventures in fishing, hunting, and in general, the whole outdoor experience.
Here's just one example of how easy it is. I keep behind the seats of my truck 3 to 4 relatively inexpensive spinning outfits. On occasion, when I'm out and about, I'll catch a glimpse of some young ones playing around the numerous ponds we have here in the D/FW area. My approach is simple. I'll walk down and put several rods down close to the kids along the waters edge, and walk the opposite direction while sailing off a cast of my own. I'll look back and ask, "Who can catch a fish outta this pond? Show me a fish and you can keep the pole and all!" Watch the response you get, because kids love a challenge. I'll visit with them for a while and afterwards, let them all keep the gear. It's a refreshing feeling to share with others our passion of the sport and the great outdoors.
I've had the joy over the past several years to participate with an organization called Turning Point Nation. Recent Hall of Fame inductee, Mike "Shorty Powers", is the wheels behind this inspirational organization. I have fished with children and adults who are learning to reach out beyond the limitations that they may once have thought had a grip on them. The pure joy and excitement in their faces, and parents who come along in my boat, is simply an amazing experience. I'm encouraging everyone to get involved and experience the gift of giving back to our community if you're not involved in some capacity presently. |
